Koh Samui, Thailand

Last week we took a mini vacation to Koh Samui which is a beautiful island off the coast of Thailand. Living in KL makes it so easy to get to these amazing beach destinations. It was only a two hour flight and you can fly on the Malaysia version of Southwest which is so easy.

We stayed at a place called Rocky's Boutique Resort. The property was beautiful and the service was impeccable. They picked us up in a really nice van and offered each of us a cool, peppermint towel after we were aboard. Upon arrival everyone got signature guava drinks in martini glasses. The we were off to our villa. Kyle and I realized we have outgrown a single hotel room so we had a two bedroom villa with full kitchen, dining area and living room. It was so nice to have the space but it was that much more we had to baby proof. This place had loads of Thai inspired decor just begging to be broke. I think Emily's name changed to No Emily for our entire stay.

On our first night they had a wedding on the beach and the bride/groom had hired an elephant to take them away from the service down the beach. Cool huh? So the front desk invited the kids to come pet it before hand. We got to see it walk down the small road to the resort and then we followed it down to the beach. The staff was great and brought bananas and coconuts so we could feed her. Of course Samantha was not interested. She wanted to see the elephant but didn't want to touch it. Emily and I got up close and pet its trunk. What a great experience to see them so close.

The next day it was a little rainy so we drove around the island exploring. We stopped at temple and took some pictures. What beautiful architecture. They also had a mummified monk on display. I little weird.

The restaurant at the hotel was SO GOOD. One night Kyle and I arranged a babysitter and a private dinner out on the "sala" which is the same area they use for massages during the day. The staff set a candlelit table with tons of fresh flowers and pillows. It is right on the water and so peaceful. Something we will always remember. I included a photo but it is a little dark to see the detail.

So the room and food were A+ but the beach was not what we expected. There is not much current in the waters so it is pretty still. Therefore, the water was a murky along the rocky beaches. You really needed to take a boat out to the outer island to do any swimming. The kids played in the sand some but it was sand castle material either. Since it was a boutique resort the pools were a little small and one was really deep. So not exactly child friendly. While the girls are young I think we will need give up boutique hotels and go where the pool slides are. While Emily napped, Samantha and I did venture to the local aquarium with our friends. It was third rate to say the least. However they did have a cute sea lion show. Hence the picture. Once again Samantha was a scaredy cat.

Overall a good trip but we are still in search of good room, good food, good pool and good beach all in one place. I think Phuket, Bali and Kota Kinabulu are next on the list.
